Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

An RSI can occur when one or more parts of the body is being overused in a repetitive fashion, over a long period of time.

The most common RSI’s that an Osteopath deals with are Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (Wrist Strain), Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow, Strained Finger (keyboard, mobile phone and Internet Game use), Shoulder and Arm Strain (hairdressing, conveyor belt, building trade).

Symptoms:

  • Sharp or dull pain in area
  • Heat and swelling due to inflammation
  • Restricted Mobility

Treatment:

Treatment involves gentle articulation and mobilisation of the affected areas. Soft Tissue Release Techniques (such as massage)will be carried out first to help soften and relax the contracted muscles that are overworking to protect the painful areas. Patients should notice a considerable reduction of pain and an overall improvement in the range of movement of the joint and tissues whilst having osteopathic treatment.  The number of treatments required (usually between one and six) will depend on the severity of the symptoms and how long they have been there.
